Alvin Tan, Minister of state, MCCY & MTI

Minister of State, Ministry of Culture, Community & Youth and Ministry of Trade & Industry, Alvin Tan (MOS Tan), expressed great support towards this initiative and resonated with the youth on the plight of job scarcity. He was once a fresh graduate during the great financial crisis and had gone through the tough experience of securing a job. MOS Tan urges the youth to grasp any opportunity at hand and finds InterviewsConnect a timely aid during this pandemic. “A wonderful social enterprise like Octopus8 through Lawrence, Karl and his team is very timely. Why is it timely? It’s because it is helping youth like yourself to be career-ready, to prepare for interviews and to prepare for job opportunities that in fact are out there.”

Joel Lim, Executive Director, International Management & Sports College

Executive Director of International Management and Sports College, Joel Lim, was also at the mercy of the great financial crisis and empathises with the employment struggles the youth today face. “Psychologically to a young and fresh graduate just joining the workforce, the situation was similarly fearful and uncertain for all of us. We were all wondering whether we could have a chance to develop our careers, would we have a job and would the job pay well?” Joel assures the youth to have hope though the future may seem bleak, and that they should continuously upgrade themselves and be ready when opportunities arise.

Toh Ser Koon, Director of EEE, Singapore Polytechnic

Mr Toh Ser Khoon, Director of Singapore Polytechnic School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, is one strong believer that career preparation is essential. Mr Toh spoke on the importance of being ready and versatile in an ever-changing economy. “Increasingly, you are facing disruptions on many fronts and we cannot be complacent. This calls for our readiness to be adaptable, resilient and adjust to the job switches whenever necessary. Hence, drawing on knowledge picked up from this workshop will prove to be a real advantage in those situations.” Singapore Raffles Music College Curriculum and Learning Specialist, Michael Gaspar, imparted a similar message on career readiness, in which he mentioned: “It is imperative to equip yourself with the relevant skill sets in whichever career you plan to pursue.”
